Hay es una de las palabras más usadas del español. Sirve para decir que algo existe o está en un lugar. Hay is one of the most used words in Spanish. It expresses existence or presence.

Hay no cambia con singular ni plural — es siempre la misma palabra. Solo hay tres formas: afirmativa, negativa y pregunta. Hay does not change for singular or plural — it's always the same word. There are only three forms: affirmative, negative, and question.

Usa hay para decir que algo existe. Funciona con singular y plural sin cambiar. Use hay to say something exists. It works with both singular and plural without changing.

Hay un café cerca.There is a café nearby.
Hay dos sillas en la sala.There are two chairs in the living room.
Hay mucha gente en el parque.There are many people in the park.
Hay un problema.There is a problem.
No hay — negativa No hay — negative

Pon no antes de hay para negar. Igual que antes, funciona con singular y plural. Put no before hay to negate. Just like before, it works with singular and plural.

No hay leche en la nevera.There is no milk in the fridge.
No hay clase hoy.There is no class today.
¡No hay problema!No problem! (Literally: There is no problem.)
No hay mesas libres.There are no free tables.
⚠️ Hay vs. Está — el error más común Hay vs. Está — the most common mistake

Muchos estudiantes confunden hay con está. La diferencia es clara: Many students confuse hay with está. The difference is clear:

Usa hay para existencia (nueva info): Use hay for existence (new information)

✔ Hay un banco en la calle. — There is a bank on the street. (introducing it)

✔ Hay tres personas esperando. — There are three people waiting.

Usa está para ubicación (ya la conoces): Use está for location (already known)

✔ El banco está en la calle Mayor. — The bank is on Mayor Street. (location of something already known)

✔ Mi madre está en casa. — My mother is at home.

4. ¿Hay ___ sillas? — ¿Cómo se dice para plural? (There are chairs — how do you say it for plural?)
✅ ¡Exacto! Hay no cambia para singular ni plural. (Hay never changes for singular or plural.)
Hay es invariable — no cambia: hay una silla / hay sillas.
5. Sabes que la biblioteca está en la plaza. ¿Cómo lo dices? (You know the library is in the square. How do you say it?)
✅ ¡Perfecto! Ubicación de algo ya conocido → está. (Location of something already known → está.)
