One of the first things a Spanish student learns is the difference between and usted. But the reality is far more complex: the Spanish-speaking world also has vos, and the rules for when to use each form vary enormously from country to country.

The three forms: tú, usted, and vos

is the informal singular second person. Used with people you are close to: friends, family, colleagues of a similar age.

Usted is the formal form. It shares the same conjugations as the third person singular (él / ella). Used in formal situations, with older strangers, or with authority figures.

Vos exists in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Costa Rica, and parts of Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador. It has its own conjugations and is the informal pronoun in those regions.

Voseo conjugations

Vos — present indicative
hablás (= tú hablas)
comés (= tú comes)
vivís (= tú vives)
tenés (= tú tienes)
sos (= tú eres)
querés (= tú quieres)

Country-by-country guide

CountryInformalFormalNotes
SpainustedTuteo has expanded greatly: strangers are often addressed as in many everyday contexts.
MexicoustedUsted is used more than in Spain, especially with older people and figures of respect.
ArgentinavosustedVoseo is the norm. is rare and can sound affected.
Colombiatú / vosustedBogotá favours ; Medellín and the interior often use usted as an affectionate form even between close friends.
Costa RicavosustedVoseo is firmly established. Usted can be used between couples as a term of affection.
PeruustedUstedeo is maintained in workplaces and with strangers.
ChileustedInformal use of teni, vai, soy instead of tienes, vas, eres (covert voseo).
Colombia’s unique case: in some regions of Colombia, especially in Medellín and the interior, usted is used between close friends and even partners as a form of affection. It is the only place where «¿Cómo está usted, mi amor?» does not sound strange.

When does getting it wrong matter?

Addressing someone as when they expect usted can be perceived as disrespectful, especially with older people in Mexico, Peru, or Colombia. Using usted in a context where is the norm can sound cold or distant. In Argentina, using instead of vos is not offensive, but it immediately marks you as a foreigner.

The practical rule

When you are unsure which to use, observe how they speak to you. If they use vos, use vos. If they use , use . If they use usted, stay with usted until they switch. This mirroring rule works in virtually every country and context.
